Political frame style of leadership involves a leader who encourages coalition and building with all clarifications. They asses’ interests build linkages and always use persuasion. Symbolic frame involves leadership through inspiration and leaders use symbols to capture attention (Bolman, & Deal, 2013). Apple inc. is a multinational corporation established on April 1976 in Cupertino, California. Based in America it deals in the production of millions of consumer electronic products such as computers and their software, mobile communication and portable digital devices, networking solutions and other applications. Foxconn technology group is from Taiwan, a multinational electronics company and is regarded as the biggest electronics contractor manufacturer globally as it produces over 40% of global electronic products.

Political frame

In political frame, organizations are coalitions and they are established by persons with authority. Apple is not a one power authority as it was not established by a group of individuals including Ronald Wayne, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniaki. Foxconn was established by Terry Gou and there is some aspect of personal power hence there is an opportunity of leading it by this frame. In the past decade, Apple and Foxconn have been faced with many scandals. Foxconn was reported to offer unfriendly conditions to its over 1.3 million workers including overworking, child labor and other management related issues. Their complains were not dealt with accordingly, the different factories workers were not interlinked while the Foxconn guidelines prevented any movement as a group except for the official unions and these were in control of the local governments and the factory management (Béja, 2011).

Political frame has been used to manipulate employees at the Foxconn factories as the management does not address their complains and as this frame bottom-up action and advocates unions, it is clearly seen that the management and the local government has taken control of the organizations which are supposed to take care of workers’ rights. Political frame is supposed to encourage new fresh ideas and approaches but this is not seen in Foxconn companies. There are opportunities for leading both Foxconn and Apple in this frame as the leadership should recognize resources and people with the unions that represent them.

In relation to Lashinsky, (2012) work, worker turnover in Foxconn factories was very high for instance at Longhua which is the largest Foxconn factory more than 25,000 employees leave job monthly thus recruitment for new workers is always continuous. In such a situation it would be very difficult for the employees to make a political action as a group. This also makes it a challenge to lead using this frame.

Symbolic frame

According to Béja, (2011) Foxconn factories employees don’t come from one region they come from different regions in china and their cultural backgrounds are different. Those who come from towns and those from the rural areas do not enjoy the same benefits as the policies group them into different dormitories and working sites. Symbolic frame has a great opportunity as a leadership style in Foxconn factories as it encourages diversity and tolerates people from different backgrounds. This frame can also be used to provide direction thus eliminating confusion and ambiguity.

Symbols always help in finding meaning in chaos, it gives clarity where there is confusion and also guides and gives predictability in mystery myths. The use of this frame will encounter challenges in Foxconn factories as the people employed come from different cultural backgrounds and social life. The difference in culture, beliefs, rituals and other cultural practices cannot be accommodated in a workplace that has a large employee population.

In conclusion, the choice of leading Apple and Foxconn sin either political or symbolic frame is not a great issue but the concept of effective and efficient management should be incorporated to ensure that all things are in the right direction and that workers issues are addressed and their rights protected.
