Summary of The Text and Videos

The book describes the fundamentals of qualitative research in total, their genres, and elements. It defines qualitative research as an assorted collection of approaches and methods used to study the natural social life through data collection, data analysis, recommendations and final dissemination of reports. The genres of a qualitative research focus on the type of literature that has some characteristics such as purpose, structure, content, length or format. The different types of genres include ethnography, which observes and documents the social life of a group’s culture, grounded theory which is a method of analyzing qualitative data in order to understand human processes and construct a  theory based on the data, phenomenology studys nature and the meaning of things, content analysis that involves systematically analyzing the print, visual media and material culture to dig out the meaning.

Mixed methods research combines both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods and analysis of its studies to bring out the meaning or even contradictory outcomes, narrative inquiry uses a variety of information but transforms the outcomes into a story. Other genres include poetic inquiry, arts-based research, autoethnography, evaluation research, action research,investigative journalism and critical inquiry which can’t all be discussed in detail. The elements include devices strategically employed to achieve a certain effect.

The poverty-environment Initiative is a collaboration between the UNDP and the UNEP that helps countries link poverty and environmental issues in their development strategy. Thailand has developed remarkably through industrialization and growth of agriculture thus is putting a toll on natural resources through pollution and further creating a wider social inequality. This brought the need to develop strategies to protect the environment at all levels, the UNDP and UNEP launched the PEI program in Thailand in partnership with the government.

The main pillars were set aside to build greater awareness of the country’s development goal to become a green society and to provide tools and processes that would enable greater local participation in the addressing of the country’s poverty and environmental problems through an integrated approach. It was established that most farmers rely on pesticides to protect their crops from bacteria, but it proves rather difficult for them hence the need for the government to intervene. The government has to set policies and educative structures that would help the population understand the need to protect their environment and to acknowledge the need to attach environmental conservation to human life.

The poor in Rwanda depend on land for their lively hood and continuous degradation worsens the situation. Improved management of the environment and natural resources by the government and people contributes directly to poverty reduction, more sustainable livelihoods and pro-poor growth. The video feature directors and former ministers talking mainstreaming economic development and poverty reduction in the national planning in order to achieve the millennium development goals. Education of people on the causes of environmental degradation show that soil erosion was one of the leading causes hence the need for policy makers and the government to take the initiative by providing the funds and required resources to sensitize people on the benefit of conservation. This has been welcomed by the government which has created a task force from each ministry on matters to do with the environment. It has also created systems at the district level who are in charge of educating people on the benefit of conservation.

Zack Matere is a potato farmer in Soy, Kenya. He planted potatoes and later discovered they were dying from a disease he didn’t know. He searched in the books, but the answers were not sufficient. So we went and google checked the information on the internet and realized that ants could be a problem, the solution was to sprinkle ashes on the potatoes and the disease disappeared. Excited about the internet, he went to a friend who had the passion of expanding his business. He took the gentleman to a nearby cyber café and google checked several sites and came up with the ideas which worked. He grew the initiative by setting up a notice-board where he could share the information he got on a daily basis in the form of posters on the notice board and realized that information could actually change the way people do things without necessarily being helped out.

Haiti ranked as one of the poorest states in the Caribbean with a whooping 49% of its population living in absolute poverty has embarked on cutting trees as a form of survival. As Benno Schmidt, a Worldfocus correspondent describes the situation dilapidated. The UN humanitarian coordinator in Haiti Joel Boutroue, describes the situation as alarming and the one that has never been seen before. The Haitians cut trees purposefully for burning charcoal, building materials, making books and  brooms. Charcoal is the common form of energy used to heat homes, cook and even sell to get income for them to survive. Such degradation is not only on land, but also in the sea where the water has been contaminated by waste, though fishermen are aware of the effects they admit having no other way of earning a living. The Haiti Prime Minister, Michele Pierre-Louis, argues that corruption is hindering the process of stopping such acts from happening but something will have to be done.
