Comparing and Contrasting Coach Doug Bruno and Mentor Warren Buffett

For an individual, group, team, or an organization to actualize their potential there must be a coach or a mentor to see them through their activities. According to dictionary definition, a coach is the one that guides, train, or instructs players of performers in some particular activity. Coaching and mentoring is therefore a process that involves management in a way that allows communication between the team being coached and the coach. Therefore, this means that both mentoring and coaching should be interactive in nature[1]. The main role of coaching should be to solve a particular problem regarding performance or to actualize the full potential of a particular team. This essay, therefore, looks at coaching in details by comparing one of the greatest coaches, Bruno and mentor Warren Buffett of Fast Company, and their leadership styles throughout their coaching and mentoring history respectively.

Coach Bruno plays an important role of leading the Basketball Women’s team while Warren Buffett plays the role of mentoring interns at Fast Company. The organization requires Bruno to deliver top performance for the team and ensure that the team remains disciplined. The business world expects Warren Buffett to deliver efficient mentorship programs to young interns ready for the job market. Besides being a mentor, Warren acts as a coach, nurturing young talents and committed to adding value to the organization through personal strategies. Fast Company is very hands and very involved and thus any intern undergoing mentorship at the company is assured of acquiring the right skills that would lead them into a successful life. In both cases, the organization provides necessary managerial support to ensure that the quality of service delivered is of high quality. Any coach or mentor not achieving this should realize that he/she is failing and needs to rethink the strategy.

Moreover, it is important to note that there are different styles of coaching and the most common are directive and non-directive coaching[2]. In directive coaching, the coach takes a position of an expert and tells the team he is coaching what needs to be done and how it should be done. Coach Bruno uses this kind of coaching to handle his team. On the other hand, in non-directive coaching, a coach takes a position of a facilitator and allows partnership with the people being coached in order to solve a particular problem and to develop their skills together. Mentor Warren Buffett uses this type of coaching because it suits his style of managing talents and remaining effective by meeting the goals of the company. The most important element in both styles is communication since it determines success of any coach and mentor.

Doug Bruno started his career back in the year 1973 as a high an assistant coach at Francis Parker High School before moving to St. Vincent DePaul High School as a head coach of the year 1974. Before that, Bruno played basketball at Archbishop Quigley High School and at DePaul University. Before moving to the Blue Demons as a head coach, he had coached various teams like Chicago Hustle, Loyola Chicago, USA Women’s under 18 and under 19 and USA Women’s National team. This shows that he has a wealth of experience in coaching basketball, especially women’s basketball where he has a lot of passion.

All these do come without any achievement and Bruno has won many titles and has held many positions in basketball. Bruno is known in his country and the entire Chicago land as a crusader for women’s basketball and this made him to be recognized in DePaul University where a court or an arena was named after him. He also served as the president of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association between 2005 and 2007 and he was named USA Basketball Developmental Coach of the year, a title he won twice. His enthusiasm in leading the team motivated him to winning the numerous titles and awards.

The Board of Directors of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association nominated Bruno before being elected as the president of the same association. He also won countless titles with various teams he was coaching and has the Blue Demons to be the star in Basketball since he took over as the head coach. All these show that Bruno is a coach of character with sound leadership skills. In addition, the coach takes the initiative of collaborating with the players to develop skills and solve problems.

What is making Bruno to achieve all these is his preferred leadership skills. He was able to disclose his leadership skills, which have made him, reach this far when InfoQ interviewed him in 2012 at XP Days Benelux 2012 Conference. In this interview, he disclosed his preferred leadership styles, which included directive management, personal consideration, and management by objectives and blame culture. He pointed out that he applies these leadership styles in different situations, which have enabled him to perform well in all the teams he has been coaching. For instance, Coach Bruno applies directive management while coaching his team on the field. He understands that only motivation and effective directions can make the team come out successful.

Above all, his most preferred leadership style is management by objectives. Bruno explained that in order for any team to succeed, the objectives must be understood and defined by all stakeholders in the team. The main reason why he prefers this management style is that it gives room for creativity and allows parties in the team to take initiatives. He explained that as a coach, he is more interested in the result than the process or the method to be followed. In addition, one style that has enabled him successfully coach various teams is a personal consideration. He also uses blame culture, coaching style when he said that each party in the team must be able to take responsibility for their action. As a coach, he is ready to take responsibility whenever his team fails and he has trained his players to be able to take responsibility for their mistakes in order to stop blame game with the team. Through this leadership style, he has been able to achieve unity in all the teams he has been coaching. He also explained that sometimes he uses a directive management method in some situations, but not always since according to him, the method is not efficient since it limits interaction between players and the coach. One can therefore conclude that he prefers or uses non-directive coaching most of the time and this has worked well for him. The outcomes from such a coach remain surprising because of the manner he handles different situations including the discipline of the players. At other times, Coach Bruno is forced to encourage his team even while it is losing by use of diverse coaching techniques while the players are still in the field.

Moreover, it is always argued that great leaders are known in the times of challenges and Bruno has not been spared either. His main challenge came in 2014-2015 women basketball season due to its inability to close games, tough opponents, and key players missing games due to injuries. He managed to put his team together when his senior guard Megan Rogowski got a one-year injury. Through his skills and experienced, he preferred spreading the spreading the floor Rogowski with McGee, who brought additional strength in the court. He was able to bring the team together common say, “the focus is on, continue to get better”. This shows that Bruno is a coach for all seasons who is not destructed with challenges that come along the way.

On the contrary, Warren Buffett is regarded as one of the greatest, successful, and respected mentors in the world, more so in mentoring young interns ready to work in the competitive industry. Warren has mentored great people in the including Bill Gates of Microsoft Company. Despite lacking any relevant ideas, Bill Gates has grown to become a successful businessperson and credit goes to mentor Warren. Fast Company has been credited for producing highly qualified interns ready to coup with different situations in the workplace. In addition, Warren Buffett has dedicated his whole life in ensuring the success of the community by offering adequate mentorship lessons. He has embraced accommodative communication skills in his mentorship programs. For instance, he never lets great work go unnoticed as well as poor work. He uses the two-minute challenge to mentor interns in Fast Company, whereby he reminds them of their main goal, states what he observes, waits for response, and asks for specific solution with the aim of brainstorming the mentee’s mind. Ina addition, he tells the mentees to find their passion and places where they can fit comfortably.

Warren Buffett takes the role of an expert and tells the mentee what needs to be done exactly. Furthermore, he must give a hint on how to handle the situation making him to be one of the most admired mentors in the world. Warren creates a cordial relationship with the mentees encouraging them to give their best no matter the cost. This builds a lot of confidence in the mentee and aspires to give better results in future. He always gives constant high fives and shoulder pats thereby motivating the mentees. Through his leadership skills, he was able to make Bill Gates a successful businessperson using common knowledge. This indicates that he is a good and reliable mentor.

Several things made Warren Buffett a successful mentor and these include observation, perseverance, imaginations, and communication. Warren explained that the most vital factor in mentoring is communication and he believed that through observation; a coach is able to know the strength and weakness of every mentee and be able to improve the performance of the team. in one of the interview, he explained that a mentee should have a personal reflection which include emotional capacity, spiritual capacity, mental capacity and physical capacity that would help in overall personal growth. Another tactic that he was able to employ was perseverance. In order to keep the fire burning, he explained that one has to accept any defeat and be able to walk away stronger. Warren believes in simple communication since it makes the information to be passed clearly. In addition, he advised that a good coach or mentor should not be wordy when training and during the mentorship program. He also uses simple communication to build confidence among his mentees by constantly encouraging and correcting them.

Through excellent communication skills, Warren has been able to mentor many successful people. He explains that there is no room for criticism in any mentorship session and that he is able to maintain discipline in all the members he is coaching by disciplining them privately. Warren also explains that a good coach should be able to know how to treat egos of his mentees and sometimes be able to understand the weaknesses that may be facing them making them ineffective. He is known to be one of the mentors who is calm, composed, and relatively secretive when it comes to his team’s mentoring affairs.

After close analysis of both the coach and the mentor, it is clear that they share many things. Both of them are able to achieve a lot during their tenure, Bruno is still the same, and it is clear that they have been in coaching and mentoring industry long enough. The two also prefer non-directive coaching styles since they would like players and interns to participate during coaching and be able to contribute towards their success. Both Warren and Bruno also value communication as they use this to bring unity within the team and to motivate the mentees. Another thing that is common between the two is that they were able to take responsibility for their action by accepting the defeat and moving on stronger.
